Chicago Locals: Dill Pickle Co-op

Chicago Locals: Dill Pickle Co-op

Located at 2746 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60647

Dill Pickle Cooperative is a grocery store in Logan Square in Chicago, IL that is democratically governed by 4,000 customers and community members to build a space where neighbor looks after neighbor and gives shoppers the comfort of knowing where their food comes from.

Welcome back to the second installment of my photo-essay, The Chicago Locals. Over a few months, I interviewed and photographed people and small businesses in the Logan Square area; I’m pleased to share the result of that photo-essay with you.

I’m a proud member of the Dill Pickle Co-op. When my family and I first moved to Chicago, the Dill Pickle was within a 5 minute walking distance from our apartment. I simply loved walking through the Dill Pickle doors to the welcome and sunny smiles from whoever worked at the cash register.

For this project, we met with David Nobel, Marketing Manager, I’talia McCarthy, General Store Manager, and Phillip Shoemaker to discuss the history of The Dill Pickle and their mission. The Pickle boasted the freshest and yummiest of fruit and veggies.

Come to find out, the Dill Pickle features locally grown produce, sourced within 300 miles of Chicago. In comparison to conventional grocery stores, co-ops work with more local farmers and producers. While shopping at the Dill Pickle Co-op, you will find informational posters that aid you in selecting healthy options. The Co-op also provides in-store demos for their products and features online recipes for healthier cooking.

When it came to choosing we would feature as part of the Chicago Locals Project, the Dill Pickle was top of mind!

With an eye on sustainability (both in the products they sell and use in their store), the Dill Pickle keeps an eye on community development and sustainability as well through partnerships with local nonprofits that serve Logan Square and Greater Chicago.

We’ve asked the Dill Pickle to share their fave spots in Logan Square! Thanks to David Nobel for passing the love and sharing his fave spots in Logan Square.

We met with David Nobel, Italia McCarthy, and Phillip Shoemaker to discuss the history of The Dill Pickle and their mission. The Coop’s principles are based on self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity.
